Japanese Tattoo History & Meaning
JAPANESE TATTOO
PRIMITIVE TATTOO PERTH
Japanese tattooing, known as irezumi, is one of the oldest and most respected tattoo traditions in the world. Its bold imagery, flowing backgrounds and full-body compositions have influenced tattoo artists everywhere, and today it remains the gold standard for large-scale work such as back pieces, full sleeves, leg sleeves and body suits.
A Short History of Irezumi
Tattooing in Japan dates back thousands of years, but the style we recognise today grew during the Edo period (1603–1868). Woodblock prints of heroes from the novel Suikoden showed warriors covered in dragons, tigers and waves, and the craftsmen who carved those prints began applying the same designs to skin. Artists worked by hand with bundles of needles fixed to bamboo or steel rods, a technique called tebori. Tebori creates soft, rich shading and is still practised by a small number of traditional tattooists, including at Primitive Tattoo in Perth.
Common Japanese Tattoo Designs and Their Meanings
- Dragon (Ryu): wisdom, strength and protection; a guardian that brings good fortune.
- Koi carp: perseverance and determination. A koi swimming upstream represents overcoming struggle.
- Tiger (Tora): courage and long life, believed to ward off evil spirits and illness.
- Phoenix (Hoo-o): rebirth, triumph and the balance of opposites.
- Hannya mask: jealousy and passion, and a charm against bad luck.
- Snake (Hebi): protection, healing and transformation.
- Cherry blossom, peony and chrysanthemum: the beauty and brevity of life, wealth and nobility.
- Samurai and folk heroes: loyalty, honour and bravery.
Backgrounds: Wind Bars, Waves and Clouds
What makes a Japanese tattoo work as a whole is the background. Wind bars, water and clouds (known as gakubori) tie each image together, frame the body and guide the eye. That is why Japanese tattoos look best when they are planned as large, flowing pieces that follow the muscles rather than small, separate designs.
Planning a Japanese Tattoo in Perth
A good Japanese piece starts with a conversation about the story you want to tell, the placement and how the work might grow over time. Many clients begin with a half sleeve and extend it into a full sleeve, chest panel or back piece. At our Barrack Street studio we draw every design by hand to suit your body, using both machine and traditional tebori techniques.
