What is the meaning of a Mandala Tattoo?

“Mandala” is Sanskrit for “circle”. Circles are central to most mandala designs. Mandala tattoos are sacred designs that are mainly used for religious purposes. They first gained their popularity amongst the Hindus and the Buddhist religion. They normally take the shape of a circle which is created from the centre towards the edges to make an awesome look.

What is the best placement for a Mandala Tattoo?

Due to the complexity of shape and the circular and geometric nature of these tattoos, when considering where to place your Mandala it is important to choose an area that offers a relatively flat surface so you can avoid distorting the image. Our experts here at Primitive Tattoo can assist you in deciding where such a tattoo would look its best for you. For a large mandala one of the best placements is the chest and back below your spine. While for smaller mandalas can be features on areas such as:

  • Back of your arm
  • Feet
  • thigh
  • inner arm
  • shoulder
  • ankle
  • nape of your neck

They are symbolic of balance, femininity and eternal. Creation of new eras in your life or new beginnings are also associated with the flower mandala. Elements within the flower design that can be included are bees, butterflies, hummingbirds all closely related to the flower and also the themes of femininity and fertility – new births.

Mandala Tribal: Cultural designs have a close link with the circle, playing a strong role in rituals and ceremonies, mandalas feature very prominently in Maori tattoo designs, ancient spiritual practices of Buddhism and Hinduism as well as Native American cultures. Ancient Celtic mandala designs also feature the Celtic knots in the shape of a circle, Common elements within tribal mandalas are the sun, moon and earth. Many tribal mandalas are created with a strong spirituality focus they represent great strength of character in the bearer as well as being aesthetically beautiful.

Mandala Leaf: At the centre of these mandalas are shapes that represent a leaf or an eye, symbolising truth and honesty and  new beginnings. They radiate outwards and unfold similar to the mandala flower.
